When there is a sloped roof to the side elevation (usually a semi-detached property), there is often not enough space within the loft to incorporate a new stairwell.

To ensure that the internal finished product looks and feels in keeping with the property, the new staircase would usually climb over the existing staircase. A hip end dormer can provide the additional space and headroom required for the new staircase and landing area.

Hip end dormers do not usually require planning permission as long as certain guidelines are adhered to.
